Keeping Curious Toddlers Safe with Smart Home Technology

Smart home technology to keep toddlers safe.

This post is sponsored by Iris by Lowe’s, but all opinions are my own.

Keeping your family safe is something every Mom thinks about, and most spend at least some time researching safety precautions before a baby is even born. I can’t even count the number of pins I saved on Pinterest relating to baby proofing and home safety.

But to be honest, I haven’t been great at baby proofing. I feel like I am always playing catch-up and baby proofing something once I see the need for it, despite my best intentions. So today I’m teaming up with Iris by Lowe’s to talk about what life is like with a curious toddler, and how new smart home technology can help keep my family (and yours!) safe from dangers both inside and outside the home.

“The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it and turn it inside out.”

Charlie is quite the curious kiddo. She loves to get into cabinets and pull things out, and loves putting things in her mouth. It makes me really nervous about what she might end up getting into and what could happen.

She also seems to be at the stage where she is wanting to open doors more and more, and I’m afraid she might get into something totally unsafe, like cleaning supplies or even opening doors to areas that she shouldn’t be, like outside, or the basement. I have a selection of child locks, but if I’m to be honest (which again, I want to be with you!), I don’t always remember to check that they are locked, and some of my cabinets just don’t have ANY, much less the doors!

Keeping Curious Toddlers Safe with Smart Home Technology

I had been hearing about how certain new smart home items can help not only make life easier, but also prevent mishaps from curious kids while keeping the entire family safe, and I thought it sounded like a really neat idea.

But a total home upgrade with a smart home renovation is just not in the budget (no matter how cool it looks on TV!). After all, we bought a 1970s house sold as a “Handyman Special”, so we would have a LONG way to go for that!

That is why I am really excited about the Iris by Lowe’s home security system, and think other moms and dads will be too.

Smart Solution for Families: Iris by Lowe’s Home Security System

Iris smart home products for toddler safety.

It is a system practically made for people like me — it is a DIY smart home & security system that can be tailored to what each family needs it for, allowing them to build a smart home at their own pace (and within their own budget).

Everything is based out of the Smart Hub, which is controlled through a smartphone app, and is designed for easy set up and use.

I like that the design is just clean and simple, and easy to blend in with other decor.

The Security Pack comes with a keypad, a motion sensor, and two contact sensors. These can be used on doors, windows, or cabinets, and will trigger a notification or alarm if opened or left open (depending on how you set it up).

I think it is a perfect solution for parents looking for some extra peace of mind to make sure their kids are not getting into areas or cabinets that are off limits!

My favorite uses of the contact sensors are for exterior & basement doors, cleaning or medicine cabinets, and windows, like in Charlie’s nursery.

This will help in future years if she tries to make a middle of the night escape too!

The door and motion sensors are great for monitoring who is coming and going, and also for making sure that little feet don’t go outside without me knowing.

There are over 100 different Iris-compatible devices such as sensors, alarms, locks (even doggie doors) which provides flexibility for whatever type of security and function your family may want in a smart home.

I have a smart plug, which allows me to control lights or other things with my phone.

Right now I am using it with a lamp, so when I have to deal with middle of the night wake-ups I am not tripping over toys on my way to Charlie’s room.

I also like that I can turn on the lights before entering the house, because trying to flip a light switch while holding a purse, diaper bag and squirmy 18-month-old is just not happening!

Protecting My Family (and Yours!)

Having a home security system also brings me peace of mind when it comes to protecting my family. Iris by Lowe’s provides an affordable security solution with professional monitoring, which can monitor intruders, glass breaking, and even smoke detectors. Knowing that my family is protected makes me more able to relax, especially when home with my daughter while my husband travels for work.

Anything that helps moms sleep better at night is a great thing!

I would definitely recommend checking out all that Iris by Lowe’s can do to make your home a smart (and safe) home. Take a look at the options, and use the code “MYIRISSECURITY” for a 10% discount until June 29th!

How could a smart home help keep your kids safe? I’d love to know in the comments below!
